Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

Generally, teen rom-coms appeal to teenagers more than any other age group. However, there can potentially be other audiences that would also watch our film.

Primary Target Audience:
  • Gender: Male and Female
  • Age: 16-24
  • Class/Background: Middle class, students
  • Why It Appeals To Them: The film is about someone who is similar to them so they can relate to it
  • Interests: Films (particularly indie films) and going to the cinema, music, the internet, TV, socialising with friends
Interests (specifically):
  • Films: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Juno, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, 21 Jump Street, Superbad, Fight Club, How To Lose Friends and Alienate People, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Inception, Avengers Assemble, The Dark Knight, 300, The Inbetweeners Movie
  • Music: Arctic Monkeys, Alt-J, Biffy Clyro, The Black Keys, Daft Punk, Disclosure, Ed Sheeran, Gorrilaz, Jimi Hendrix, Justin Timberlake, Kings Of Leon, The Libertines, Muse, Pink Floyd, Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skrillex, The Smiths, The Strokes, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend
  • TV: How I Met Your Mother, The Tomorrow People, My Mad Fat Diary, Skins, Misfits, The Inbetweeners, The Big Bang Theory, Waterloo Road, South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, Flight of the Conchords
This age group watch lots of films. This is another reason that they are out primary target audience. 29% of 16-24 year olds visit the cinema at least once a month and 16-24 year olds and families (our secondary target audience) make up 40% of cinema admissions in the UK. This shows that our primary and secondary target audiences are prevalent cinema-goers and that they are fairly likely to want to see our film at the cinema.

Secondary Target Audience:
  • Gender: Male and Female
  • Age: 30-45
  • Class/Education: Middle class, parents of members of the primary target audience
  • Why It Appeals To Them: The film is something that they can enjoy with their kids and it also may remind them of when they were at school
  • Interests: Going to the cinema with their family, TV, music, cooking, etc

Tertiary Target Audience:
  • Gender: Male and Female
  • Age: 24-30
  • Class/Education: Middle Class, Well-educated, Maybe just finished university
  • Why It Appeals To Them: The film allows them to revisit their time at school and they can enjoy looking back at when they were Michael's age and, perhaps, in his position.
  • Interests: Their careers, social lives, partying, technology, music, film, politics, etc
Interests for this category are particularly broad as this generally is a time when people discover who they are and what they want to do with their lives so the potential list of interests is massive. The one thing that everyone from this age group has in common is that they have finished education fairly recently and would enjoy to look back at their time at school.
Potential Further Audiences:
  • Anyone who enjoys indie films or rom-coms
  • Anyone who enjoys going to the cinema with their friends, family or just alone
  • Anyone who uses online film streaming services like Netflix or LoveFilm
  • Anyone who lives abroad and has an interest in British or indie films (particularly in America where similar films like 'Juno' have been very successful)
Many people stream films online
Families enjoy going to the cinema together

In general, we have found that teen, indie films are most popular with teenagers, both male and female. This is the reason that people of both genders, aged 16-24 are our primary target audience. We really feel that, because these people already watch and enjoy indie films about teenagers, they will be able to enjoy our film and will be able to relate to it too.
