Group 4 Film Opening

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

Our core audience was 16-24 year old males. We used the Katz and Blumler Uses and Gratifications theory to target them.

Our narrative structure makes the audience was to watch the rest of the film. By starting with a disequilibrium rather than an equilibrium, we immediately introduce the problems into Michael's life. Instead of Michael's world being orderly and calm, it is turned upside down by the breakup. We thought that this was a lot more interesting and gripping than having an equilibrium and would be much more effective at making the audience what to continue to watch the film.

Our opening also has characters that are relatable for our target audience. Michael is a teenager that has just been dumped by his girlfriend. There will be teenagers who have had this happen to them that are watching the opening. They can empathise with and relate to Michael and will be inclined to continue to watch the film so that they can see how he deals with the situation and maybe learn from his story.

Audience Feedback

We conducted an online survey using www.surverymonkey.com to find out what people thought of our film. I made a post on Facebook with a link to the opening on Youtube and to the survey, asking people to watch the opening and then answer the questions. 34 people did this. We wanted to know what they had enjoyed most about the film, which audience demographic they fitted into, how often they watched films and what kinds of films they like. These are the results:

Almost everyone who completed the survey was between 16 and 24 years old

There were roughly the same number of males and females, meaning the results show the opinions of both genders

This survey shows that the majority of our target audience (the people we surveyed) see roughly 4 films per year at the cinema. This is a lower number than we expected.

Most of them really enjoyed the film opening

These are some comments people left about the film. People commented on the editing, the cinematography, the similarities it had to other films in the genre and generally how much they enjoyed it (apart from my acting).

Almost everyone who watched the opening said they would watch the rest of the film, showing that overall our opening was successful at appealing to the target audience.

What does this data tell me?

Almost everyone who completed the survey was aged 16-24. I also know that almost everyone who did it was linked there from my Facebook post, meaning they were my friend on Facebook. 99% of my Facebook friends are aged 16-19 so we can assume that the data is mainly representing this age group. 18 females and 16 males answered the questions so the date we collected represents both genders fairly equally.

A large majority of people said that they go to the cinema either once a month or once every 3 months. This confirms what we had already suspected - 16-24 year olds go to the cinema a lot. This data shows that our primary target audience goes to the cinema fairly regularly, meaning there is a decent chance that they will see our film at the cinema.

Almost everyone said that they enjoyed our film opening and that they would watch the rest of the film. People liked the soundtrack, the editing and our protagonist, Michael. People also commented on the similarities that it had with 'Submarine' and 'The IT Crowd'. A couple of people said my acting could be improved (fair enough) but overall people enjoyed the opening and someone even said it made them laugh.

Overall, this data tells me two things.
  1. Our target audience enjoyed watching out film opening
  2. Our target audience goes to the cinema fairly regularly and is likely to see our film at the cinema
This video shows people's reactions to our opening.
